What's the difference between Sanitize and Disinfect?

Sanitize:

Free of visible dirt contaminants that could affect your health. ** Meant to REDUCE , NOT kill, the occurrence and growth of bacteria, viruses and fungi. Substance used to make something clean/hygienic. Does not kill any type of viruses. Sanitization products are used to help bring down the number of pathogens on a surfaces to bring it to a safe operating level.

Disinfect:

Kills the microscopic organisms – bacteria, viruses and fungi. Most disinfectants are 99.99%. Chemical agents designed to inactivate or destroy microorganisms on inert surfaces. Disinfection does not necessarily Kill ALL microorganisms, especially resistant bacterial spores. (Sterilization – extreme physical or chemical process that kills ALL types of life).

ATP Testing VS Microbiological Testing

ATP Testing:

  • Rapid results (60 seconds or less)
  • Reduced cost ($)
  • Bioluminescence technology – using the enzyme called Luciferase found in fireflies, reacts with ATP to register RLU (Relative Light Units), then tells you HOW dirty the surface is
  • Lower RLU = Cleaner the surface
  • Higher RLU = Dirtier the surface
  • ATP – adenosine triphosphate – found in all living and once living things (ENERGY)
  • Tells you how DIRTY the surface is – does not tell you WHAT is on the surface

MICROBIOLOGICAL:

  • Time consuming process – take tests to lab
  • Takes days to receive results
  • Very costly ($$$)
  • Tells you the specific pathogens on the surface being tested
